WordBloom Privacy Policy
Effective: October 25, 2026
WordBloom is an English–Japanese vocabulary-learning app operated through Tonari No Tony. This policy explains the information WordBloom handles and the choices available to you.
Information WordBloom handles
- Garden and study data: courses, words, translations, review schedules, streaks, and preferences are saved on your device. The Android app also sends a random installation identifier, display name, points, streak, active course title, course-level counts, and card-ID keyed review timing to WordBloom's service so it can maintain shared progress and leaderboard state. It does not send card text or answers in that automatic progress update. An optional account backup or public-course submission can send more course content when you choose those features.
- Study-page images: when you choose “Create a course from a photo,” the selected image is sent to WordBloom’s secure processing service to extract editable study cards. The request is configured not to be stored by the AI processing request itself.
- Optional account-backup data: if you continue with Apple, WordBloom stores an authenticated backup of your garden, including your display name and study data, so it can be restored on another device. The current Android release keeps its garden on the device while the shared v3 account migration is being completed.
- Leaderboard profile: your display name, points, current course title, and—only if you choose one—your profile image may be uploaded to show the shared leaderboard. We do not show your course list, study history, or individual word results there.
- Catalogue search and pronunciation: if you search the public course catalogue, the search phrase is sent to WordBloom's service to return matching courses. If you use natural pronunciation, the study word or phrase is sent to WordBloom's audio service and its speech provider to make the clip; Android can use device speech as a fallback.
- Optional illustrated usage scenes: if you choose “See it in use” for a study card, WordBloom sends that card's word and example sentence with an app-installation identifier to its service. The service may use image-generation and speech providers to create an illustration, short example dialogue, and spoken lines. Generated scenes and media can be saved so you can reopen them; they are not part of a public learner-activity notification. Scene-creation limits and request identifiers may also be stored to prevent duplicate charges to your daily allowance.
- Favourite activity notifications: if you explicitly favourite a public leaderboard learner and choose notifications, WordBloom stores the favourite and your selected mode (all activity or big moments). Android may send a Firebase Cloud Messaging device token and an installation identifier so the notification can reach that device. Notifications contain only high-level public activity, such as growing a garden, reaching a level, or reaching a daily points milestone. They never include words, courses, answers, or exact session details.
- Public-course submissions and safety reports: a course title, cover image, cards, and examples are stored for moderation when you ask to submit a course for public review. They remain private unless approved. If you report a public course, WordBloom stores the course, selected reason, time, and a one-way device pseudonym so the report can be reviewed without exposing your raw installation identifier.
- Daily creation allowances: WordBloom uses a random app-installation identifier, a device credential, request identifiers, and creation counts to enforce free daily limits and prevent duplicate charges to an allowance. This does not require a WordBloom sign-in.
- Premium status: Apple handles iPhone subscription purchases and payment details. WordBloom receives and verifies transaction identifiers, subscription status, and access dates to provide Premium benefits and respond to renewals, cancellations, refunds, and restores. We do not receive your full payment-card number. Android purchases are not enabled in the current release.
- Support messages: the information you choose to send through the support contact form.
How we use information
We use this information to create and run your courses, schedule reviews, enforce creation allowances, provide Premium benefits where available, restore an optional backup, send the public activity notifications you selected, moderate public-course submissions and safety reports, respond to support requests, and keep WordBloom reliable and secure.
Sharing and public courses
We use service providers to operate WordBloom, including secure hosting, image processing, and speech generation for optional natural pronunciation. We do not sell personal information or request cross-app tracking permission. The shared leaderboard shows a learner’s chosen display name, points, current course title, and optional profile image; it does not show their course list or individual word results. A course you submit for public review is not publicly available unless it is approved; approved course content and cover imagery can be viewed and studied by other WordBloom learners. A contributor identifier shown to the app is a one-way pseudonym used only to let learners hide that contributor’s courses.
Advertising and consent
On iPhone, free-tier study sessions may show ads when this feature is enabled. Premium trial and paid Premium users do not receive session-completion ads. The iPhone app includes Google AdMob and Google's User Messaging Platform to manage ad requests and applicable privacy choices. Ad requests are configured for non-personalized, general-audience inventory with protective child-directed treatment; WordBloom does not ask for your age or request permission for cross-app tracking. When ads are enabled and permitted, Google may process technical and ad-use information such as IP address, app or device identifiers, diagnostics, performance data, ads shown, and interactions with ads. This can support ad delivery, measurement, security, and fraud prevention even for non-personalized ads. See Google's Privacy Policy and Google's Mobile Ads data-disclosure information. Where a privacy choice is required, WordBloom asks through Google's consent interface before requesting an ad; available ad-privacy options can be reopened from Settings. If ads or consent are unavailable, the learning session continues without an ad. The current Android app does not include AdMob or serve ads.
Retention and deletion
Local garden data remains on your device until you remove it or delete the app. If you use Sign in with Apple, you can delete your WordBloom account and connected cloud backup from the account section inside the iPhone app. The current Android release offers in-app deletion of its device-scoped WordBloom profile and linked remote learner data; after remote deletion succeeds it clears local gardens, images, cached audio, reminders, settings, and its local session vault. Uninstalling the Android app only removes local data and does not by itself request deletion of data already sent to WordBloom.
Some content and records may need separate handling. An approved public course is shared catalogue content and is not automatically removed when its creator deletes a device-scoped profile. Generated usage scenes and their media may also remain after that deletion. Creation-allowance records may retain a content-free identifier and count for security and misuse prevention. Pending submissions and unresolved safety reports may be retained while needed for moderation, security, payment records, or legal compliance. To request access, correction, export, or deletion of a submitted course, generated scene, or other retained data, use the WordBloom deletion-request page and begin your message with “WordBloom privacy” or “WordBloom account deletion.” We may need to verify that the request relates to you before acting on it.
Your choices
You can use the main learning experience locally without signing in or starting a subscription. Free daily creation allowances reset at midnight Japan time. Camera access is requested only if you choose to take a picture, photo access uses the platform’s system picker, and notifications are requested only after you enable reminders or choose a favourite activity-notification mode. You can change notification access in the operating system settings. On iPhone, you can manage or cancel a subscription through your Apple account; ending Premium does not delete courses or study progress.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical measures intended to protect information in transit and at rest. No service can guarantee absolute security.
Updates and contact
We may update this policy when WordBloom changes. The effective date above will be updated when we do. For questions, email tony@tonarinotony.com or use the WordBloom Support page.
